CONCEPT
In a world where the concept of protection is becoming ever more present in our lives, "Protection" invites viewers to reflect on the complex layers of protecting oneself and those around us in the modern age. The exhibition explores various themes of protection, such as physical, emotional, cultural or environmental. Our aim is not to induce fear of living or to develop paranoia, but to aspire to develop a new kind of vigilance in interaction with the world modern and with its increasingly subtle and numerous threats.
The mental space that forms between protection and non-protection, i.e. the moment of decision, is the working material that the two artists use to illustrate various instances of reality. They initiate visual explorations to determine the contemplation of the degree of protection needed in our lives and the delicate balance between protection and exposure to new experiences. From exploring the implications of overprotection to the risks associated with underprotection, their work offers a nuanced analysis of limits and balance.
The artists navigate through a tapestry of themes, including gaslighting, information and task overload, energy boundaries and relationship dynamics, thus revealing an increased level of complexity of interaction with society and the absence of a perennial simplicity.
One of the sources of inspiration came from Massive Attack's 1994 album "Protection", which is a seminal work in the trip-hop genre. Known for its atmospheric soundscapes and mixing electronic music with elements of hip-hop, dub and soul, the album explores themes of vulnerability, security and emotional resilience and the complexity of human relationships.
